The circuit has a data input register storing two n-bit words each divisible into p bytes containing q bits. Each of the bytes may contain a character of the binary number. The first stored word contains the character of the highest value in the binary number. A displacement device is connected to the data input register and shifts the words in the register such that the byte of the first word is flush to the left. The bytes in the words containing the remaining characters can be stored in an intermediate register. The bytes are arranged from left to right in decreasing order of value. A format switch changes the format of the words in the intermediate register such that the bytes of the binary number are flush to the right. The reformated binary number is then stored in an addressable register.
