Satd. ketones are prepd. by addn. of acetone on an olefinic cpds. of formula R1CH=CHR2 (where R1 and R2 are H or 1-30C satd. alkyl, and can together form a 3-20C alkylene gp). The reaction is pref. effected in presence of a persulphate ion-Ag ion couple as initiator in an acetone-water mixt. Amt. of Ag used is e.g. 0.01-10 g.at. per 100 moles persulphate Ratio of water to acetone is e.g. 0.1-10:1, pref. 0.4-2.3:1. Reaction is pref. at 40-60 deg.C in absence of oxygen and without contacting a metal surface. The persulphate is pref. added slowly to the reaction medium and is pref. NH4 persulphate. An excess of acetone per mole olefin which is less than in prior art and an amt. of persulphate less than the stoichiometric amt. are used. The oxidising soln. contg. the Ag ion catalyst is easily sepd from the reaction prods. and can be reused.
