The work station is designed to facilitate the location and orientation of circuit components in a circuit board matrix. The principle of the technique is to illuminate one or more circuit board holes (14) from underneath to allow the leads of a component to be correctly inserted rapidly without the need for reference to a circuit plan. The circuit board is positioned in a frame containing a matrix of holes (12) with are located under and are slightly larger than the circuit board holes. A corresponding matrix of light-emitting diodes (10) is positioned under the intermediate grid of holes and, when turned on, the light is guided through the circuit board hole. A keyboard-executable control program causes light-emitting diodes to turn on to indicate the positions of component leads, their total outline, or any other required feature, e.g. a flashing diode in indicate the position of a supply pin. A carousel of trays containing the various components to be inserted is positioned on the work station.
