Cylinder jacket for IC engine - has inner wall with ceramic insert in combustion zone and defining fluid flow passage

The ic-engine for a motor vehicle has a cylinder jacket with an inner wall (6) to engage the piston and a surrounding cylindrical outer wall. The walls form flow passages for a coolant fluid and the inner wall can be formed in several sections, at least one of which is non metallic. The non-metallic material (8) can be visco-elastic and can be cast in place. The visco-elastic material can contain metal particles to aid its conductivity and can have a coefficient of heat loss which has an optimum value in the zone of combustion. There can be a ceramic insert in the inner face of the inner wall.
