Process for the preparation of tert-butanol, by liquid-phase oxidation of isobutane, with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst of general formula LnMXpY in which M is a metal chosen from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, manganese and copper, L is a ligand from the group of 1,3-bis(2'-pyridylimino)isoindolines, X is an anionic group, for example carboxylate, Y an alkylperoxo, aralkylperoxo, mu-peroxo or peroxo group, n = 1 or 2, p = 0 or 1. The reaction takes place in the presence of 1 to 5,000 ppm by weight of catalyst relative to isobutane, at a temperature of 40 to 180 DEG C and at a pressure of 10 to 100 bars.
