PRODUCTION OF MOLTEN METAL BY MELT REDUCTION

PURPOSE:To produce molten metal with the use of ordinary coal and with smaller electric energy by semi-reducing a solid metallic oxide with the discharge gas from the 2nd melt reduction furnace and oxygen-contg. gas then blowing coal, etc., and oxygen-contg. gas to the furnace and executing melt reduction. CONSTITUTION:Iron ore 3 is charged as the solid metallic oxide into the 1st melt reduction furnace 1 and the discharge gas 9 contg. gaseous CO generated in the 2nd melt reduction furnace as well as the gaseous oxygen 11 are blown into the furnace to semi-reduce the iron ore 3 by heating and melting by which the molten semi-reduced iron oxide 4 is obtd. in a method for producing molten metal by using two units of the melt reduction furnaces. Such molten iron oxide 4 is taken out of a take-out port 13 and is charged into a charging port 17 of the 2nd melt reduction furnace 2. An auxiliary raw material 7 such as lime is charged thereto and the coal 10 and pure gaseous oxygen 11 are blown into the furnace. The iron 4 is thus reduced to form molten pure iron 5 which is recovered through a take-out port 18. The discharge gas 9 contg. a large amt. of the gaseous CO discharged from a discharge port 19 is supplied partly to the furnace 1 and the rest is used as gaseous fuel 32, etc.
