PURPOSE:To carry out the photo-addition cyclization of clathrated norbornadiene in high efficiency to quadricyclene compound, by clathrating norbornadiene or its derivative in a cyclodextrin-ketocarboxylic acid ester, and irradiating the clathrate compound with light. CONSTITUTION:A quadricyclene compound can be prepared by clathrating norbornadiene or its derivative in a cyclodextrin-ketocarboxylic acid ester (e.g. beta- cyclodextrin-o-benzoylbenzoic acid ester), and irradiating the clathrate compound with light source emittting ultraviolet radiation, e.g. high-pressure mercury lamp, low-pressure mercury lamp, xenon lamp, etc., or irradiating a mixture of said clathrate compound and a cyclodextrin clathrate compound of norbornadiene with light, thereby effecting the photo-addition cyclization of norbornadiene or its derivative. EFFECT:Since the cyclodextrin acting as the host has photo-sensitive group, the process is extremely advantageous for the practical use of the chemical conversion process of solar energy.
