PURPOSE:To produce a preform for producing a composite material composed of SiC whiskers and metal by loosening the SiC whiskers by ultrasonic oscillation in a solvent, mixing pulverous metallic powder therewith and subjecting the mixture to drying, pulverizing and pressurizing. CONSTITUTION:The needlelike SiC whiskers having 0.1-1mu diameter and 50- 200mu length are mixed at a ratio of 1g with 3.5-5cc water or org. solvent. Ultrasonic oscillation of 10-100kHz frequency is then applied to the mixture to loosen the SiC whiskers. A binder is added thereto if necessary. Polyvinyl alcohol is used if the refrigerant is water and hydroxy and propyl cellulose are used if the solvent is an org. solvent. The binder is used at the about of 0.1-0.1 times the total amt. of the pulverous metallic powder to be added next and the SiC whiskers. Powder of an Fe-base alloy and Ni-base alloy having =44mu grain size is added thereto and the powders are uniformly mixed and dried to remove the solvent; thereafter, the powder mixture is pulverized and molded under the pressure. The preform of the composite material composed of the SiC whiskers and the metal is thus produced.
