PURPOSE:To determine quantitatively and easily iron in water by adding an iron ion color former and surface activating agent to the test water in which the iron ion is ionized by an ionizing agent. CONSTITUTION:The ionic value of the total iron ion in the test water is made uniform after the insoluble iron in the test water is ionized by the ionizing agent. More specifically, the bivalent iron ion is oxidized to tervalent iron ion by using an oxidizing agent or the tervalent iron ion is reduced to bivalent iron ion by using a reducing agent so that the iron ionic value in the test water is made uniform to the tervalent or bivalent iron ion. The color forming reagent contg. the iron ion color former insoluble in water and the surface activating agent for solubilizing the same are added into the test water to develop the color. The colored condition is then compared with a standard color forming chart, etc. and the concn. of the iron ion is measured. A need for a pretreatment such as boiling with hydrochloric acid is eliminated and an operation for extracting solvents is omitted and therefore the measurement in a short period is made possible.
