PURPOSE:To determine quantitatively and easily a slight amt. of dissolved iron and to obtain a reagent for quantitative determination to be used for said determination by solubilizing an iron ion color former insoluble in water and surface active agent into water. CONSTITUTION:A bivalent or tervalent iron ion color former is used as the iron ion color former insoluble in water so that the quantatitive determination of the dissolved iron in various states is made possible. The bivalent iron is oxidized to the tervalent iron by using an oxidizing agent or the tervalent iron is reduced to the bivalent iron by using a reducing agent to permit the quantitative determination of the total dissolved iron. The reagent for quantitative determination in this stage is produced by solubilizing the iron ion color former insoluble in water in the water by using a surface active agent. The measurement of the dissolved iron in the water by using the reagent for quantitative determination is executed simply by injecting the test water into said reagent, and comparing the coloration generated by such injection with a standard color forming material or color forming chart by naked eyes. The varied densities of color tones can be changed to a change in color tones by making combination use of a dye with the reagent for quantitative determination. The easy quantitative determination of a slight amt. of the dissolved iron is thus made possible without an operating for extracting by an org. solvent or a colorimetric operation using a spectrophotometer.
