PURPOSE:To avoid variation in reactive power by connecting a phase advancing capacitor to a power source terminal and performing the control so that the delayed reactive power of the cycloconverter and the advanced reactive power of the phase advancing capacitor cancel each other out. CONSTITUTION:The phase advancing capacitor C is connected to the power source terminal. The sum IPN of an output current IP of a positive group converter SS-P and an output current IN of a negative converter SS-N in the cycloconverter CC, (IPN=IP+IN) is controlled. Thus the delayed reactive power of the cycloconverter CC and the advanced reactive power of the phase advancing capacitor C cancel each other out.
