The invention relates to a process and apparatus by means of which the sulphur bound in solid or gaseous fossil fuels is removed upstream of the boiler plant or the like and is bound into an additive. In the combustion chamber, the additive is then sintered with the bound sulphur. According to the invention, the desulphurisation of the fuel is carried out under controllable temperature conditions and regulable residence times in the preliminary sections so that virtually completely desulphurised fuel is burnt in the boiler chamber. The sulphur constituents are discharged with the additive via the ash removal unit. Combustion of the sulphur constituents of the fuel within the boiler to form SO2 does not take place.
