Heat recovery from gases discharged by liq. columns, esp. from carbonating equipment used in sugar prodn. involves direct contact, counter-current mixing in a closed space. - The heat recovery liq. is admitted near the top of the space and flows downwards. The hot, saturated gas is admitted, pref. as far as possible from the liq. inlet, and flows upwards. The steam content of the gas is condensed on contact with the liq. stream. The heated liq. is discharged near the bottom and the cooled gas is discharged near the top of the closed space.
