A method of producing a new antibiotic containing poly-hydroxy anthraquinone moiety designated as MT81 and having, potency against gram-positive bacteria which comprises subjecting a strain of Penicillium nigricans to submerged aerobic fermentation in an aqueous nutrient medium consisting of moistened rice or moistened wheat or moistened potato for a period of 9 to 11 days while maintaining the medium at a pH range of 6 to 6.9 and isolating the antibiotic formed from the nutrient medium by any of the methods known per se.
