The spool (7) for cord, cable etc. comprises a hollow (e.g. cardboard) cylinder (11), two end flanges (9) and two end covers (10). The covers secure the flanges against the ends of the cylinder and have a cylindrical portion (12) fitting in these ends. Each flange is secured to the respective end cover, pref. integrally and consist partic. of plastic. The cylindrical portions (12) may be provided with circumferentially spaced external axial ribs (13). The diameter (D) of the circumscribed circle slightly exceeds the internal diameter (d) of the cylinder.
