Prepn. of anti-leukaemic behenic arabino furanosyl cytosine - from cytarabine and behenic acid, catalysed by silicon tetra:chloride, is anticancer agent

cytosine (I) is prepd. by treating 1-beta-D -arabinofuranosyl cytosine (II) with behenic acid CH3(CH2)20COOH (III) in the presence of a catalytic amount of SiCl4. Specifically (III) is suspended in pyridine and SiCl4 added in a non-polar solvent to give a homogeneous soln. The soln. is treated with (II) and stirred for 2-3 hours at 20-60 deg. C. Addition of cold water gives crystals of (I).
