Steffimycinone derivs. of formula (II), esp. (+/-) 7-epi-8-demethoxy-steffimycinone and intermediates for their prepn. are new. Antitumour agents formed by glycosidation of (II), pref. with amino-sugars, esp. (2R,4S)-9-methoxy-2-methyl 4-O-(3'-amino-2',3',6'-tridesoxy -alpha-L-lyxo-hexopyranosyl) 2,4,5,7-tetrahydroxy-3,4-dihydro -2H-naphthacene-1, 6,11-trione of formula (XII).
