1-(5-Oxo-hexyl) 3,7-dimethyl xanthine of formula (I) is made by a phase transfer reaction between 3,7-dimethyl xanthine and 1-bromo 5-hexanone, with strong agitation in presence of a phase transfer catalyst, e.g. tetrabutyl ammonium hydrogen sulphate, at below b.pt.. The aq. phase is NaOH soln. and the organic phase is an immiscible solvent e.g. benzene.
