The work bench makes it possible to grip securely small-sized or large-sized workpiece slabs to be engraved in one plane and at the same time to work securely in particularly relatively small, elongated workpieces at different heights. According to the invention, the slab-like workpieces are fixed directly on the bench top (3) between a front gripping jaw (6) and a displaceable stop (7). In contrast, elongated, relatively small workpieces to be worked at a different height are fastened on a height-adjustable figure stand placed separately against one side of the bench top, and worked there. The height-adjustable figure stand (10) fastened to the rear of the bench possesses a figure screw (11), upon which the elongated workpiece to be hewn can be mounted. After loosening a lock-nut of the figure screw, the workpiece to be hewn can be easily turned on the figure screw. The bench top (3) together with the front gripping jaw (6) and the stop (7) can be fitted so that they can be swivelled from the horizontal about the front of the supporting frame (2) of the sculpture bench, so that a slab-like workpiece can be easily engraved even when inclined.
