The invention provides combustion in a rotary kiln at temperatures above 1200 ° C using combustion air in the temperature range between 300 and 800 ° C with a small excess of air and a reduced amount of flue gas. The invention further proposes to carry out the heat transfer from the hot flue gas to the combustion air with the aid of a heat transfer solid, the solid being heated in contact with flue gas and then cooled in contact with air and this air being heated to the combustion air temperature and fed to the furnace of the rotary kiln.
