Process for the purification of Claus plant tail gases and recovery of sulfur compounds contained therein

The sulphur compounds are recovered as elemental sulphur by (a) hydrogenation of the sulphur present in the waste gases or of the oxygen-containing sulphur compounds and/or of the carbon disulphide to give hydrogen sulphide; (b) precipitation of the water present in the waste gas and formed during hydrogenation; (c) removal of the hydrogen sulphide; and (d) recovery of elemental sulphur from the removed hydrogen sulphide; in this process, the removal of hydrogen sulphide is carried out by means of membranes which are selectively permeable to hydrogen sulphide and the removed hydrogen sulphide is recycled into the Claus plant.
