P The waste gas is subjected to a treatment comprising a hydrogenation and hydrolysis phase (1) to bring the sulfur-containing compounds in the sole form of H2 S, cooling (4, 10) to a temperature in the theta interval at 180degree C, theta being the dew point of the gas effluent water from the hydrogenation and hydrolysis phase, and a selective catalytic oxidation (2a) of the H2 S to sulfur at temperatures in the theta range at 180degree C leading to deposition of the sulfur formed on the catalyst and periodic regeneration of the sulfur-laden catalyst (2b), then cooling of the regenerated catalyst in the theta range to 180degree C for reuse in the catalytic oxidation phase. /P
