To control single-celled organisms which produce enzymes which cleave amino acids, it is possible to use a composition which contains a) at least one mononucleoside with the exception of adenine derivatives and/or b) at least one mononucleotide with the exception of adenine derivatives and/or c) at least one oligonucleotide whose terminal bases are different from adenine, and/or d) at least one nucleic acid base with the exception of adenine and/or e) at least one nucleic acid base which contains a carboxyl group, with the exception of adenine. These active substances inhibit the enzymes which cleave amino acids, such as deaminases and decarboxylases, which provide the single-celled organisms with the nitrogen which is necessary for life. This controls the single-celled organisms.
