The system has each of the sections to be shunted, which differ in length and weight, arranged initially in a series sequence from which they are fed one at a time. Each section is discharged at a velocity which is higher than that of the preceding section until a terminal velocity is obtained. When a section is to be fed along a path corresponding at least in part to that followed by a preceding section, the system determines the spacing which must be allowed between them, in dependence on the travel time of each which is obtained in accordance with their length and axle weighting. When both sections are to be fed onto the same track, the times at which the rear and front buffers of the successive trains reach the same point is determined and the time difference between them compared with the previously obtained min. value so that the launching velocity of the second section can be reduced.
