The thread cutter has two rotating cutting wheels (3,4) connected to an electronic measuring device (6) that measures the forces produced during cutting i.e. those produced when the workpiece is rolled against the cutting wheels. The measuring device is connected to a data processor. A comparator (9) compares the max. and min. of the measured forces with preset limits. Resistance expansion strips (6) are used to measure the axial force. An optical display (13) or acoustic device indicates when the measured force has exceeded a limit. The appts. is used to detect the occurrence of faults at an early stage.
