Ingestible psyllium compsn. comprises granules of psyllium powder having at least 90% psyllium content, rendered rapidly dispersible in water by the presence of a surface coating of up to 10 wt.% of non-toxic, solid, alcohol-soluble, water- dispersible polyethylene glycol and/or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Pref. the coating comprises 2-5 wt.% of polyethylene glycol of mol. wt. 3000-8000, or a mixt. of 2.5-4 wt.% of polyethylene glycol of mol. wt. 3000-8000 and 0.5-2 wt.% of polyvinylpyrrolidone. The latter compsn. renders the granules less friable than granules coated with the same amt. of polyethylene glycol only. The coated granules are prepd.by wet granulating psyllium powder with a soln. of polyethylene glycol and/or polyvinyl pyrrolidone in a volatile organic solvent, opt. mixed with water. Substantially anhydrous solvents, i.e. no more than 10% water, are prefd. A suitable solvent is 95% EtOH. Psyllium is a laxative. The present compsn. is instantly and uniformly dispersible in water or aq. beverages e.g. milk, coffee, tea, fruit juices, etc.
