For an automatic gambling machine comprising a symbol gambling device (1) controlled by a random-number generator (4) and a control device (3), which displays a symbol combination deciding on winning or non-winning before the end of the game, with a processor (5) which determines a winnings signal representing the magnitude of the win from the random number, by means of which the control device (3) activates one of a number of winnings-individual display elements (8), the latter being combined in strictly monotonic sequence of winnings to form a winnings display ladder (10), it is proposed that the processor (5 - transforms equally distributed random numbers into random numbers of predetermined distribution, - selects, in accordance with the predetermined distribution, a winnings signal from a set of winnings signals which comprises the winnings signal determined and a group of higher-valued winnings signals and that the control device (3) has activated, at the end of the game, the display element (8) to which the magnitude of the win of the selected winnings signal is allocated. The automatic gambling machine according to the invention can increase the winnings achieved without the gambler suffering losses. The associated increase in payout remains within a calculable and economically supportable frame, the calculability of the increase in payout being based on the predetermined distribution in the transformation of the initially equally-distributed random number.
