To be able to record image representations, which are transmitted by analog signals obtained during the line-by-line scanning of an original to an output device, by means of a dot matrix printing mechanism, the analog signal is compared with a threshold value. With the image line which can be generated by the dot matrix printing mechanism being subdivided into n matrix dots, the comparison value is switched through n times to the printing mechanism, pixels being recorded or not recorded depending on the position of the analog signal compared with the threshold value.
