The invention relates to a process for increasing the deuterium content in hydrogen when producing a hydrogen-containing gas by catalytic conversion of gaseous hydrocarbons with steam, subsequent CO shift conversion and separation of the steam condensate. Such a gas naturally contains deuterium which, prior to the final processing of the gas, is separated and extracted therefrom. The residual hydrogen-containing gas can then be processed further as required, for example to give ammonia or methanol.
