The invention relates to novel pharmaceutical preparations which can be administered topically and have antibacterial and antimycotic activity, which, together with good activity, have no side-effects, form no resistant microorganisms, are readily tolerable and, in spite of this, can be prepared inexpensively. The active principle is zinc ions, which are continuously released at the site of action from the soluble zinc salts contained in the pharmaceutical preparation, such as, for example, zinc sulphate, zinc gluconate, zinc acetate, zinc chloride and others. The compositions are used for topical application to the skin and the mucosal membranes and are employed in the form of gels, ointments, sprays, emulsions, solutions and pastes.
