The invention describes an apparatus and method for detecting the toxic pollutant fraction in the outside air for the purpose of controlling ventilation in vehicles, vehicle interiors, engine cabins, room cells and rooms, in such a way that, as soon as a critical pollutant fraction in the outside air is reached, the air supply from outside is temporarily interrupted. The invention deals with the need to include climatic factors such as humidity and temperature as analysis variables, as it is known that the sensitivity of the body with respect to pollutant fractions in the air breathed in increases as the air temperature and the air humidity increase.
