The invention relates to a tunnel kiln for firing green or prefired, pitch-impregnated carbon mouldings, with gas-tight base troughs which are movable within the kiln chamber on tunnel carriages in the longitudinal kiln direction and on which the stacked mouldings can be protected from direct contact with the kiln atmosphere by covering elements placed over them. In order to make the tunnel kiln also suitable for firing green or prefired carbon mouldings, it is proposed to design the construction in such a way that the covering elements are sleeve-like bodies which are open at both ends and which stand in the base troughs and can be closed gas-tight at their upper end by a removable lid.
