The invention relates to a system for separating stacked publications (7) such as newspapers, journals, magazines or the like. The system possesses two container arrangements (5, 5') which each have at least one publication container (4, 4'), open at the top side (40), and are arranged so as to be movable back and forth alternately between a loading station (32) and a separating station (6). At least in the separating station (6) the publication containers (4, 4') are inclined, with respect to the vertical, towards the removal side. Each publication container (4, 4') has a base (44) which is movable in a vertical direction (33) and has allocated to it in each case a separate lifting device (48) arranged on the respective container. In the separating station (6), a suction device (53) which can be moved in the vertical direction (33) and, at the removal side, an inclined slide plate (54) are arranged opposite each container (4'), at the top thereof. The slide plate (54) can be moved back and forth, transversely to the vertical direction (33) of the container, between an advanced position partly overlapping the container top side (40) and a position releasing the container top side (40).
