The encashment counter consists of a read head (2) for prepaid value cards (1), a value-decrementing head (3), a control device (4), a non-volatile memory (8) with a credit register (9), a display device (6), a power meter (15) and a blocking switch (16). In a first operating mode of the encashment counter, the validity of the value card (1) is checked and indicated on the display device (6), the value of the value card (1) is decremented and the credit register (9) is incremented by one value unit. In a second operating mode, the validity of the value card (1) is also checked and indicated but the value of the value card (1) is not decremented and the credit register (9) is not incremented. This allows the validity and authenticity of the value cards (1) and the operability of the encashment counter to be checked. A service card or a switch is used for switching the operating mode. IMAGE
