To straighten coiled material into rods, roller straightening machines or rotor straightening machines are used, the straightened rod being fed through the cutting-off die, running into a downwardly covered channel and severed by means of a reciprocating cutter, the cutter stopping feeding for the time in which cutting off is carried out. The length is fixed by an impact bar. Conversion setting-up time is considerable. There is no direct length measurement. By use of a fast-running, narrow cutter A, material feed is not stopped during cut-off. By synchronisation between material feed and the rotational speed of the rotating cutter, the length can be fixed. These values, which can be read off from the indicating device, Fig. 3, of the cut-off frequency, set out in millimetres, permit a direct length read-off during machine setting. Since the cross-section and length of the straightened rods change continually, this method makes immediate readjustments possible.
