Sodalite photo- and/or cathodo-chromic material comprises a monolithic structure of homogeneous polycrystalline sodalite having a density of at least 99% theoretical. The material is made by pressing halogen-contg. sodalite powder at a temp. below which extensive volatilisation of the alkali halide occurs and below the sodalite m.pt. Pref. conditions are temp. 950-1250 deg.C and pressure 50-300 MPa for a period of 20-40 mins. In a pref. method, the sodalite powder is vacuumed at 400-700 deg.C for 30-60 min. before pressing. The material is used for recording information from UV, X-ray, gamma ray, electron beam sources etc. in different information systems. The prod. has better sensitivity and superior optical properties to prior art sodalite materials.
