Combustion chamber surfaces 6, 7, 8 and intake and exhaust passage surfaces 9, 10 are coated with a closed cell organic or inorganic foam in order to insulate the combustion chamber and passages to prevent the formation of deposits on the combustion chamber surfaces and reduce the heating of the charge entering the combustion chamber. Specific examples of the composition, thickness and insulating properties of suitable foams are given with particular mention of syntatic foams containing polyimide resin, carbon black, fumed silica and gas filled microspheres.
