Nitrogen additives which can be used as agents for the lowering of the cloud point of the middle hydrocarbon distillates and compositions of middle hydrocarbon distillates containing said additives

The additive has mol.wt. 500-10,000 and is formed by reaction of (i) a polymer or copolymer of at least one unsatd. aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof; (ii) at least one primary amine of formula (I) or (II), R-Z-((-CH2)n-NH-)m-H (I), HO-CH2-R'-NH2 (II), (where R is 1-30C satd. alkyl, Z is -NH- or -O-, n is 2-4, m is 0-4, and R' is 1-18C satd. alkylene), equivalent to 50-100% of the carboxylic groups of the polymer; and (iii) at least one primary alcohol R"CH2OH (where R" is 16-30C aliphatic), equivalent to 50-0% of the carboxylic groups. The cloud point is lowered e.g. by 4 deg.C; the limiting filterability temp. e.g. by 5 deg.C; and the pour point e.g. by 12 deg.C. The temp. of first appearance of crystals on cooling is lowered (and not merely the crystal size). Corrosion is inhibited.
