PURPOSE:To improve the quality and yield of ingots by raising or lowering molds in compliance with the descending speed of the bottom blocks of the molds and the supply rate of a molten metal. CONSTITUTION:The plural molds 2 are provided to the inside enclosed of a machine frame 1 and are supported by a mold header 3. Lifting means 4 consisting of screw jacks are disposed in symmetrical positions to the frame 1 having a box-shaped section to support the header 3 by lifting shafts 41. The mods 2 are made simultaneously movable up and down in a horizontal state by the header 3 when the shafts 41 are moved up and down by such mechanism. The molds 2 are moved up and down in compliance with the descending speed of the bottom blocks and the supply rate of the molten metal to maintain the specified molten metal level during casting of an Al alloy, etc. The thickness of the primarily solidified structure layer is thus suppressed and the quality and yield of the ingots are improved.
