PURPOSE:To improve the strength and weldability of a base metal and also the corrosion resistance of a composite material by heating an assembly slab at a temperature of =1,050 deg.C, and thereafter, rolling it at a finish temperature of =800 deg.C, and thereafter, bringing it water cooling to a temperature of 450 deg.C. CONSTITUTION:An assembly slab obtained by superposing a composite material consisting of stainless steel, and a base metal consisting of carbon steel or low alloy steel and welding its periphery is heated at a temperature of =1,050 deg.C. In this way, a Cr carbide can be dissolved enough to stainless steel being the composite material. After this heating, said slab is rolled by setting a rolling finish temperature to =800 deg.C. In this case, when a rolling reduction is performed in a temperature area of 800 deg.C, a corrosion resistance of stainless steel of the composite material is deteriorated. Immediately after rolling has been completed, the rolled assembly slab is brought to water cooling to a temperature of 450 deg.C. As for a stainless steel clad steel plate which has been obtained in this way, the strength of the base material rises greatly, and the weldability, especially, a characteristic of a low temperature crack resistance can be improved.
