The functions of control of a multi-ratio gearbox are performed by hydraulic motors under the control of electro-magnetic valves which are operated by microcomputer. A differential clutch mechanism involves two oil pumps coupled to electric motors, one of which accelerates while the other slows down. - The motor revolutions are linked by servo control so that the system's reaction time is governed by ability of the motors and pumps to reach identical conditions quickly. Complementary devices are provided for priority gear engagement, reversion to proportional control, and starting on an adverse gradient.
