Medium comprises a thin film of a metal alloy deposited on a substrate, the alloy comprising (a) one or more light rare earths such as Sm, Nd, Pr and Ce, (b) one or more transition metals such as Fe, Co and Ni, (c) one or more metals chosen from Cr, Ti, Al and Cu and (d) one or more heavy rare earths such as Tb, Gd and Dy. A pref. alloy has the formula (L1-xZx)yT1-y-zEz (I) in which L = light rare earth metal (a), Z = heavy rare earth metal (d), T = transition metal (b) and E = metal (c), x = 0.1 - 0.9, y = 0.2-0.5 and z is greater than 0 and less than or equal to 0.1.
