In order to determine the technical condition of a tyre, the contact time of the freely suspended body with the tyre cord weave side surface is measured simultaneously with the acceleration of the body during its contact. An electrical signal concerning the acceleration is fed from an indicator fixed to the non-striking end of the body or inside it to a further indicator for electrical signal fronts, and then to an acceleration meter. From the meter, the signal is fed to the second input of a contact time indicator where at the end of the thrust of the body against the tyre the contact time and acceleration variations are recorded on paper or in a memory in an oscillograph tube. The comparison of the contact time and acceleration data with reference values enables the hardness of the tyre side walls and pressure within the tyre to be calculated.
