Compsns. contain an effective quantity of an acyl carnitine deriv. of formula (I) (CH3)3N+-CH2-CH(OR)-CH2-COO- (where R = acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, hydroxybutyryl, hexanoyl, octanoyl, decanoyl, palmitoyl, stearoyl, acetoacetyl, succinyl, isovaleryl or crotonyl), or their salts, esters and amides with a suitable vehicle or support. Unlike known cpds. the acyl carnitine derivs. are free from undesirable side-effects. The compsns. are administered orally or parenterally in daily doses of 10-50 mg/kg of active cpd. Animal tests and clinical trials are described.
