Counter-current contacting device or distd. column comprises a central shaft supporting one or more inverted cones having fin(s) extending from their lower surface. The rotatible central shaft is located in a housing having one or more frustonical surfaces extending from the inner wall between the cones mounted on the central shaft such that at least one fin has a profiled distal border parallel to the surface of a liq. flowing over the frustoconical surfaces. Pref. (a) at least one fin has a profiled distal border as above; (b) the housing is sealed and gas or vapour is recycled through the column; (c) the housing has means to recirculate liq. from atleast one liq. outlet in the housing to one of the higher frustonical surfaces including means to heat the liq. prior to its re-introduction into the housing; (d) at least one fin is curved to reduce resistance to rotation caused by the gases or vapours in the column; (e) at least one fin has a profiled distal border parallel to the surface of the liq. flowing across the surfaces and gases or vapours flow across the surface of the liq. such that the gases or vapours are isolated and selected volatile components are withdrawn (f) embodiment (e) carried out under vacuum; and (g) embodiment (e) with re-introduction of reheated liq. at a higher surface as in embodiment (c).
