PROCESS FOR SOLVENT REFINING OF COAL USING A DENITROGENATED AND DEPHENOLATED SOLVENT

ABSTRACTA process is disclosed for the solvent refining ofnon-anthracitic coal at elevated temperatures andpressure in a hydrogen atmosphere using a hydrogensolvent which before being recycled in the solventrefining process is subjected to chemical treatment toextract substantially all nitrogenous and phenolicconstituents from the solvent so as to improve theconversion of coal and the production of oil in thesolvent refining process. The solvent refining processcan be either thermal or catalytic. The extraction ofnitrogenous compounds can be performed by acid contactsuch as hydrogen chloride or fluoride treatment, whilephenolic extraction can be performed by caustic contactor contact with a mixture of silica and alumina.
