PHASE SENSITIVE[JLTRASONIC MODULATION METHODFOR THE DETECTION OF STRAIN-SENSITIVESPECTRAL FEATURESAbstract of the DisclosureA phase-sensitive ultrasonic modulation method forthe detection of strain-sensitive spectral featuresinvolves the use of an ultrasonic field with well-defined wave fronts and a light beam of spot size lessthan the ultrasonic wavelength and of line width lessthan that of the spectral feature. When the lightwavelength coincides with the wavelength of the spectralfeature, the ultrasonic wave shifts, splits, or broadensthe absorption line shapes of the various centerscontributing to the spectral feature thereby changingthe amplitude or phase of the light beam or emittedfluorescence in synchrony with the ultrasonic field.
