A method of detecting and quantifying oxidative injury to living cells. Cells suspected of having suffered oxidative injury are contacted with a complex comprised of a luminescer and serum albumin. A light generating reaction is then triggered and the amount of light emitted can be measured. The luminescer is non covalently bonded to the serum albumin. The method detects cell membrane-bound aldehydes, a product of oxidative injury to cells.
