epoxy novolac resins having reduced components 2 functions and a method for reducing constituents 2 functions in a novolac resin that can be used to prepare the epoxy novolac resins. When the components 2 and 3 functions functions are present in a novolac resin to the epoxy phenol-formaldehyde, the weight ratio between the component 2 and component functions to 3 functions is less than 1.1: 1. When the components 2 and 3 functions functions are present in a novolac resin to epoxy cresol-formaldehyde, the weight ratio between the component 2 and component functions to 3 functions is less than 0.5: 1. The epoxy novolac resins of this invention after polymerization have an elevated glass transition temperatures. These resins are useful in the preparation of compounds, castings, coatings, adhesives and laminates.
