A method of determining the microwave power in the spectrum of the outgoing and/or returning wave modes in an overdimensioned microwave guide, a part of the power of each mode of interest being coupled out an measured by a waveguide wall situated parallel to the waveguide longitudinal axis, characterised in that the angular distribution of the radiated microwave power is measured relative to the waveguide longitudinal axis in the radiation field at the coupling-out place, and the spectrum of the wave modes of interest is determined from the angular distribution.
